Women See the Greatest Impact

The study, which analyzed over 22,000 non-exercising adults using data from the UK Biobank, discovered striking differences in the effects of VILPA between men and women. Women who engaged in just 3.4 minutes of VILPA daily experienced a remarkable 45% reduction in the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including heart attacks and heart failure. Even shorter durations of 1.5 minutes per day were linked to a 30-40% reduction in risk.

For men, while the benefits were evident, the dose-response curve was less pronounced, suggesting that combining VILPA with structured exercise could offer the best cardiovascular protection.

Why Does VILPA Work?

Experts believe the benefits stem from the intensity of these activities. For women, VILPA bouts reached a relative intensity of over 83% of their maximum oxygen consumption (VOâ‚‚ max), categorizing it as high-intensity exercise. This intensity may help explain the more profound effects observed in women compared to men.

“Short, sharp bursts of activity during daily tasks can trigger physiological changes comparable to structured exercise,” explains Professor Stamatakis. “This opens doors for those who struggle to maintain regular fitness routines.”
