COSMOS Researchers Track Inflammation Markers
Investigators at Mass General Brigham and their colleagues launched the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS) to test whether cocoa extract supplements can reduce inflammation and prevent age-related diseases. Over several years, the team gave daily cocoa flavanol capsules to thousands of participants and tracked five key markers of inflammation. Scientists have long studied the favorable connection between chocolate and heart health.
“We wanted to see if cocoa flavanols could make a real difference in the aging process,” said Dr. Emily Foster, a COSMOS lead researcher. “Our data show that participants who took cocoa supplements experienced significant drops in markers like C-reactive protein and interleukin-6.”
The researchers monitored participants regularly and found that those receiving cocoa extract maintained lower levels of inflammation compared to the placebo group. “These results suggest that cocoa flavanols may help protect against chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes,” Dr. Foster explained.
Experts See Promise for Healthy Aging
Chronic inflammation drives many age-related illnesses, and the COSMOS findings point to a new strategy for prevention. “We’re excited about the potential for cocoa supplements to support healthy aging,” said Dr. Foster. “But we always remind people that supplements work best alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise.”
The team plans to continue following participants to study long-term effects and safety. As interest in natural anti-aging solutions grows, cocoa extract supplements could become a key part of preventive health for older adults.
